Ed Sheeran Surprises Fans with Secret Set at Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025
Music fans at Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025 in Liverpool were treated to a stunning surprise when global superstar Ed Sheeran hit the New Music Stage for an unannounced performance that left the crowd buzzing.
A Surprise Appearance That Stole the Show
While many expected a major guest appearance, few could have predicted the “Shape of You” hitmaker himself would be the one to appear. Radio 1 built up the anticipation with a cryptic Instagram post teasing “the one and only,” which was later revealed to be Ed Sheeran, setting social media on fire.
Sheeran’s decision to perform on the New Music Stage came from a desire to connect with fans in a more intimate setting. “I’ve never played this stage before,” Sheeran said, adding that he loves the tent’s “unmatched energy.” Despite the smaller size of the stage, the vibe was electric, with thousands cramming in to see the beloved singer.

Fans React with Joy—and Frustration
For fans like Ellie, David, and George, who managed to make it into the tent, the experience was unforgettable. “It’s absolutely mental,” Ellie said. David added, “It’s amazing what he does musically. This was a once-in-a-lifetime moment.”
However, not everyone was so lucky. Due to overwhelming crowds, access to the stage had to be temporarily paused once the area reached full capacity. Festivalgoers like Kate and Scarlett were disappointed to miss the set. “I messaged my mum when it got announced,” said Kate. “They were so jealous. I promised to send videos, but now I won’t be able to.”
Sheeran’s Festival Legacy Continues
This marks Sheeran’s fifth appearance at Big Weekend, the last one being in Coventry in 2022. He’s currently gearing up for a major European and UK tour, where he’ll be joined by rising star Myles Smith, known for his hit “Stargazing.”
Despite calls from some attendees to have Sheeran perform on the Main Stage, his intimate set made the surprise even more special—and something fans will be talking about for years.

What’s Next at Big Weekend 2025?
This year’s Big Weekend is hosting more than 100 artists across four stages, with over 100,000 attendees expected. While Sheeran’s surprise set was a major highlight, the weekend is far from over.
On Saturday night, Sam Fender will headline, followed by Mumford & Sons on Sunday. Other major performers hitting the Main Stage include Tate McRae, Lola Young, Jorja Smith, Wet Leg, and HAIM.
Radio 1’s Big Weekend continues to cement its place as one of the UK’s most exciting music festivals—complete with unexpected moments like this one from Ed Sheeran.
