Daisy Edgar-Jones Shines in New ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Adaptation Directed by Georgia Oakley

Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to bring new life to one of Jane Austen’s most beloved heroines in a fresh adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. The Normal People star will portray Elinor Dashwood in a reimagined version of the classic novel, directed by Georgia Oakley—best known for her acclaimed debut Blue Jean, which earned the People’s Choice award at the Venice Film Festival in 2022.

The film will be produced by Working Title Films and Focus Features, the same studios behind hit Austen adaptations like Pride and Prejudice (2005) and Emma (2020). Production is slated to begin next month in the United Kingdom, with Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner at the helm, joined by India Flint of November Pictures and Jo Wallett.

Australian novelist Diana Reid, the author of Love & Virtue and Seeing Other People, has penned the screenplay. This marks Reid’s screenwriting debut, bringing a contemporary literary voice to Austen’s 19th-century narrative.

A Modern Take on a Classic Tale

Sense and Sensibility tells the story of the Dashwood sisters—Elinor and Marianne—navigating love, heartbreak, and financial hardship in Regency-era England. Edgar-Jones will take on the emotionally complex role of Elinor, while casting for Marianne is still under wraps. The story explores themes of societal expectations, emotional restraint, and female agency—elements that continue to resonate with audiences today.

Georgia Oakley’s involvement hints at a bold new perspective. Her work on Blue Jean showed a deep understanding of social issues and female identity, suggesting this version of Sense and Sensibility could emphasize the feminist undertones often found in Austen’s work.

Edgar-Jones’ Rise Continues

Daisy Edgar-Jones continues her impressive career trajectory following breakout performances in Normal People and Where the Crawdads Sing. She is also set to star in the highly anticipated summer blockbuster Twisters (2024), further solidifying her status as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand talents.

Her casting as Elinor Dashwood places her in the company of previous greats like Emma Thompson, who not only starred in but also won an Academy Award for writing the screenplay for Ang Lee’s 1995 adaptation. Fans are eager to see Edgar-Jones’ interpretation of the quietly strong and emotionally nuanced Elinor.

A Promising Collaboration

With a powerhouse production team, an award-winning director, and an increasingly iconic leading actress, this new version of Sense and Sensibility promises to blend classic storytelling with modern cinematic insight. Whether you’re a devoted Austen fan or new to the Dashwood sisters’ journey, this upcoming film is one to watch.

Stay tuned for casting updates and behind-the-scenes news as production begins.
