Playing Celine Dion on Stage: Lauren Drew’s Star Turn

Read Time:2 Minute, 39 Second

Taking on the role wasn’t just a dream for Lauren Drew—it was a serious responsibility. Playing Celine Dion on stage means delivering not only powerful vocals but also embodying her signature energy, humor, and emotion. “There’s pressure because people adore her. They expect those iconic vocals and that larger-than-life presence,” Drew said.

“I didn’t even hesitate,” Drew said when she was offered the lead in Titanique, a musical parody that turns the tragic Titanic story into a wild, hilarious ride, all told through the voice and imagination of the Canadian pop icon. For Drew, a self-proclaimed superfan of Celine Dion, stepping into her shoes was a challenge she welcomed with open arms—and full lungs.

Born in Port Talbot, Wales, Drew’s love for performing started early. She first made a name for herself as a freestyle disco dancer before discovering her passion for acting and singing during school. Her journey took her from Neath Port Talbot College to Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, where she earned a full scholarship. But the road wasn’t easy.

Coming from a working-class background, Drew worked tirelessly from the age of 14 to support her ambitions. “My family gave up everything so I could chase this dream. I’m doing this for them,” she shared. Now at 32, she stands among stars like Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen, also hailing from her hometown.

In Titanique, Drew’s portrayal of Dion blends over-the-top comedy with heartfelt homage. Co-created by Tye Blue (of RuPaul’s Drag Race fame), the show reimagines the Titanic story through a surreal lens—think Celine Dion crashing a Titanic museum and rewriting history with theatrical flair.

“It’s unapologetically crazy joy,” Drew says. “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, but mostly, you’ll be on your feet.” Audiences agree—every show ends with standing ovations. And celebrities like Alan Carr and Amanda Holden are among the fans.

Despite its comedic edge, the role demands serious vocal chops. Dion’s iconic “My Heart Will Go On” is no small task. “There’s real pressure,” Drew admits. “People expect Celine’s vocals, and I don’t take that lightly. I’m living like a nun right now—hydrating, studying every video, every mannerism. The chest pound, the hand flick—Celine’s very deliberate in everything she does.”

Her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Drew was recently nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical—one of theatre’s highest honors.

While Titanique doesn’t address Dion’s recent health struggles, including her battle with Stiff Person Syndrome, the show still pays tribute through its energy and emotion. It’s a celebration of Dion’s legendary career, done with humor and heart.

Drew’s journey from a small Welsh town to center stage in London’s West End is a testament to talent, perseverance, and passion. As she continues to win hearts with every note and every laugh, her story inspires dreamers everywhere to aim high—because anything is possible when you’re truly dedicated. And for Lauren Drew, nothing captures that dedication more than playing Celine Dion on stage.
