Disney’s Hercules Brings Myth, Music, and Magic to London’s West End

Disney is flexing its theatrical muscles once again with the arrival of Hercules on the London stage. Premiering at the iconic Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the stage musical breathes fresh life into the 1997 animated film, dazzling audiences with high-energy performances, iconic songs, and creative new twists to the original story.

Opening officially on June 24, 2025, Disney Hercules West End marks yet another major live adaptation from the studio, following the successes of Frozen, The Lion King, and Aladdin. But unlike its predecessors, Hercules leans deeply into modern storytelling while keeping the mythological heart of the original alive.

A Legendary Tale, Retold for the Stage

The musical retells the heroic journey of Hercules, the son of Zeus, who is stripped of his immortality as a baby by the devious Hades, god of the underworld. Determined to earn back his place among the gods, Hercules sets out to become a true hero—battling monsters, finding love, and discovering what it really means to be strong.

But don’t expect a carbon copy of the film. According to co-writer Robert Horn, the production offers a story that feels both new and familiar: “It’s a myth that reflects contemporary culture and still honours the DNA of the animated movie.”

Among the most notable changes is the character Phil. In the film, he’s a grumpy satyr trainer voiced by Danny DeVito. In the stage version, Phil is reimagined as a charming taverna owner. Actor Trevor Dion Nicholas, who plays Phil, said, “He still supports Hercules, but we’ve been able to deepen their relationship into something more paternal and emotionally rich.”

The Muses Steal the Show

If there’s one element that continues to win over fans, it’s the fabulous Muses. Played by a powerhouse cast of vocalists, these five narrators serve gospel energy, humor, and heart through dynamic choreography and bold costume changes.

Malinda Parris, who plays Calliope, emphasized the significance of representation: “We’ve idolized these women for years, and now we’re giving young girls the chance to see themselves in these strong, soulful roles.”

Music That Soars – and Some New Surprises

Of course, no Disney musical would be complete without its soundtrack. Legendary composer Alan Menken and lyricist David Zippel return with classic hits like Go the Distance and Zero to Hero, while introducing a lineup of fresh songs exclusive to the stage version.

The musical originally debuted in a workshop production at New York’s Central Park in 2019, followed by a German-language run in Hamburg. Now, with its London premiere, Hercules joins the ranks of Disney’s global theatre phenomenon.

A Cult Classic Finds New Glory

Although Hercules didn’t reach blockbuster status upon its 1997 release, the film has since developed a devoted cult following. The musical builds on that nostalgic fanbase, while welcoming new audiences with humor, heart, and a message about what it really means to be a hero.

Running at Theatre Royal Drury Lane until March 28, 2026, Disney Hercules West End is a must-see for families, musical lovers, and longtime fans of the animated classic.
