A rediscovered Thomas & Friends pilot episode, originally filmed in 1983 and thought to be lost to time, has been lovingly restored and will premiere on YouTube on Friday, May 9, to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the franchise.

According to former series producer Ian McCue, the rediscovery happened somewhat serendipitously. The production team stumbled upon old film reels tucked away in storage and undertook the delicate task of restoring the footage with “great love and care.”
“Even as a test piece, it still has that lovely, classic, timeless story to it. The charm is undeniable,” McCue shared during a recent BBC Radio 4 interview.
